Indian River School District Implements NEW Dress Code

On June 26, the Indian River Board of Education approved a new student dress code for the 2007-2008 school year. The dress code will take effect on the first day of school - Tuesday, September 4.

Provisions of the new policy are as follows:

• Collared shirts, polo shirts, T-shirts, turtlenecks, sweaters, sweatshirts, vests, pants, jeans, Capri pants, skirts, skorts, culottes, jumpers and dresses are acceptable. Hooded sweatshirts are acceptable provided the hood is not worn during the school day.

• Students must wear shoes that will not slip off the feet and thereby cause a safety problem. These include athletic shoes, oxfords, flats, pumps and sandals. Inappropriate footwear includes flip flops, shower shoes, beach shoes, thongs, bedroom slippers, unfastened shoes and shoes missing the appropriate closures.

• Shirts, tops, blouses and dresses must either have sleeves or cover the area from the neckline to the shoulder. They must also overlap the bottom garment or be tucked in. Any clothing that is transparent or exposes the midriff, naval or excessive cleavage is not acceptable.

• The length of skirts, skorts, culottes, jumpers, shorts and dresses must not be more than two inches above the top of the kneecap while the student is standing.

• No visible holes in any clothing are permitted.

• Clothing designed to be worn as undergarments may not be visible.

• Coats, jackets or other outwear may not be worn in the classroom.

• No headgear may be worn inside the school.

• Students shall not wear pants that sag below the waistline. Clothing with printing across the buttocks area is prohibited.

• Clothing must not be obscene, vulgar or ethnically, culturally or sexually offensive.

Students who violate these provisions may be subject to suspension under the district’s Student Discipline policy. Exceptions to this policy may be granted by school’s administration upon the presentation of approved documentation stating a bona fide reason for the request.

Parents can obtain a full version of the revised Student Dress Code (Student policy JFCA) from the district web site, www.irsd.net, or by contacting their child’s school. The policy will also be printed in the 2007-2008 district handbook and calendar, which will be distributed in September.
