District Implements NEW Student Supervision Policy

On May 22, the Indian River Board of Education approved a new Supervision of Students policy for the 2007-2008 school year. The policy applies to all after-school events and takes effect at the beginning of the school year in September.

The Board of Education believes that in order to provide a safe and orderly environment at all after-school events, spectators should sit in provided seating or stand in designated areas. The purpose of the policy is to prevent unnecessary movement before, during and after events and to restrict the attendance of persons under the age of 18 unless they are accompanied by a responsible adult.

“Assuring the safety and security of all spectators is of the utmost importance to the Board of Education,” Superintendent Susan Bunting said. “The district’s policy committee reviewed this issue last spring and developed regulations that will create a secure environment at all district-sponsored events. As a result, after-school and evening activities will be more enjoyable for everyone in attendance.”

For high school events, students in Grades 9-12 may be admitted if they provide acceptable identification upon request. Elementary and middle school students (Grades K-8) or other persons under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Those not under the supervision of an adult will not be permitted to enter or remain at the facility.

For middle school events, middle and high school students (Grades 6-12) may be admitted if they provide acceptable identification upon request or are accompanied by an adult. Other persons under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

For elementary school events, any person under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

The district reserves the right to require any person to show a picture identification to verify his or her name, age and address before he or she is permitted to act as a responsible adult for a person under the age of 18.

Adults or students who do not comply with this policy may be asked to leave the facility or may be detained until the parent or responsible adult is located to remove them from the premises. Spectators may also be banned from attending after-school events in the district for a length of time to be determined by the school principal.

Parents can obtain a copy of the Supervision of Students policy (Student policy JHFA) from the district web site, www.irsd.net, or by contacting their child’s school. The policy will also be printed in the 2007-2008 district handbook and calendar, which will be distributed in September.
